Exploring the Sega Card: A Unique Gaming Format (pt 2)

With the My Card EP there were two initial titles installed on the card before the player chose to purchase the rewrite option and install one of the other selections. The player had a choice of Star Jacker or Dragon Wang, Dragon Wang being the prequel to the slightly better Kung-Fu Kid on the Master System released a couple years later (85 vs 87).

Both games the very simple left right up down scroller beat em up style game we have all come to love, especially during that time period. Known for their extremely deep character arcs and world building. The cooler part about Dragon Wang however was that it could never actually be beaten. After the last level was “beaten” it simply infinitely repeated itself. There is no ending and the Kung-Fu master must punch for all eternity, never to actually rescue his love Kyoko. There will never be enough punching in his or your life to bring an end to it.

It was both published and developed by SEGA and considering the length and simplicity of the game it received relatively positive responses. The game technically only had four rounds (FOREVER) with six bosses technically. Each stage built on the previous with the bosses, that is; stage one had three, stage two had the previous three plus another, stage three had the previous four plus another, and finally stage four had the previous five plus one final boss. Interesting structure, haven’t seen it repeated a lot and it makes me think of endless trial type games (which plays in its favor!)

ONLY WITH TRUE LOVE CAN YOU BECOME HER HERO! TRY NEXT ROUND!

[Next round is Star Jacker, a space shoot ‘em up]
